Eckert and Orchard City residents need to attend the next county commissioner meeting Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. The county is preparing to buy the north end of the Burgess Ranch for a gravel pit.
We have several dangerous county road and Highway 65 intersections that need some serious consideration. The crest of the Vela hill is very narrow and would need to be widened before gravel is hauled. Highway 65 is an extremely dangerous area with no turning lanes and a very narrow entry to North Road between the Big E Market and the old phone building. How can two large semi trucks possibly use this turn at the same time?
We see the dangers waiting at North Road and Highway 65 every day. The movement of cattle semis from area ranches and a large amount of semi and truck traffic during fruit harvest make the area a red zone. Everyone in the area has seen many close calls and we know someone will lose their life at this intersection. The candy store, antique store, fresh fruit market, church and the remodeled IOOF hall make this area very congested.
I feel the state highway department needs to closely look this intersection over and study the situation carefully.
