Dear Editor:
Thank you and Greg Figenser for the article, "A unique friendship," by Anika Carlson. As one who has worked for many years, in many ways, to create a society which includes persons with disabilities, and perceives them as having importance and something to offer, I was moved to read Anika's essay about her friendship with Dantrick Reed.
I have known Anika since she was born, and have seen her show similar wisdom and generosity in her friendship with my foster son, and have often been impressed by her sensitivity and kindness.
In her relationship with Dantrick, she demonstrates awareness that while they may have differences, they have much in common, especially the need to be valued as a friend. By her example as one who "gets it," Anika is making a significant contribution to building a community in which young people with physical and emotional struggles are provided with respect and dignified inclusion that will help them to feel not so different. Thank you Anika for being who you are, and creating a path that others will hopefully choose to follow.
