Electorate is not well informed

Dear Editor:

I happened to hear Herman Cain yesterday and he focused my attention on a facet of education I had never contemplated. In reviewing our current political situation, it is difficult to understand how a well-informed electorate could possibly re-elect a man who has buried the country in debt, done nothing to resolve the unemployment problem, imposed an onerous health care law, and put the economy on a self-destruct course.

Don’t let partisan politics divide the county

Dear Editor:

The letter from Gretchen Nicholoff was the most radical piece of liberalism I have ever read. If you have money and have an R behind your name, you don't work and you keep all your money in an offshore account.

Dear Editor:

Why stop at $9 an hour for minimum wage? Why not just go for $10?

More motorized routes should be closed

Dear Editor:

Recently the Colorado Mule Deer Association hosted a sportsmen's presentation in Grand Junction on BLM roads/trails, and is apparently of the opinion that, "Being able to drive into an area that has had a ... road or ATV trail is critical for hunters and anglers." We should all endeavor to remind our fellow hunters that motorized overuse and abuse is one of the biggest threats to public lands habitat and hunting in Colorado and nationwide.

Stop the spending!

I think the following figures are correct. In any case, they accurately illustrate the problem.

More guns = less crime

Put land conservation on equal ground with oil/gas

Dear Editor:

I’m writing to applaud former Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt for challenging the Obama Administration to put land conservation on equal ground with oil and gas drilling. There are many treasured places, such as the North Fork Valley, that do not have the permanent protection that would guarantee that our children and grandchildren would be able to experience Colorado’s unique outdoor and agricultural heritage.

Innocent schoolchildren have rights too

Dear Editor:

Yeah, I know, I know, the Second Amendment to our Constitution gives American citizens the right to bear arms. How could I not know it when it’s being shouted from the rooftops all the time by some folks who will never be part of a well-regulated militia?

Devil’s Thumb is an asset worth preserving

Dear Editor:

Having moved to Delta in the early ‘70s we have come to appreciate its rich history, celebrate what the city has become and look forward to its future. We are grateful for the many assets that are available to those of us who live in this town and to those who might be thinking of relocating here to work, to raise families or to retire.

Authorities should regulate, not ban, pot sales

Dear Editor:

Imagine that most of the people who drink alcohol own and operate their own still, partly because to buy any commercially produced alcohol they had to travel out of the area. Of course, many will just buy a Mason jar of “moonshine” from a neighbor willing to produce extra.

No, this isn't a story about a classic movie or book from the 1960s or '70s. But it is a story that originated back in the 1970s concerning the City of Delta.
