Tipton is making good on his promises

Dear Editor:

As expected, there are those who are critical of Congressman Scott Tipton's vote against the Senate bill (actually it is more accurate to call it a "deal") which some claimed would avert the so called fiscal cliff. Those same critics would have us believe that Tipton actually wants to see a recession and a government shut down.

Stronger commitment to mental health is overdue

Dear Editor:

With the start of a new year, let us redouble our efforts to address the lessons of 2012. The pain is still fresh and we at Colorado West join the rest of the nation in mourning the tragic loss of life at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

A community united can accomplish great things

Dear Editor:

Our family would like to offer a note of thanks to our neighbors, the community of Crawford and beyond, the many people that offered their insight and professional expertise, and the Delta County Commissioners for their diligence and attention to the facts regarding the M&L Mining proposal for a gravel pit approximately 3⁄4 mile west of the town of Crawford. The research done, the information compiled, and the genuine concern for the health, welfare and rights of everyone was overwhelming and inspiring, proving that the power of the people and the political process working together are a remarkable thing.

Take fracking off the table

Dear Editor:

In writing this e-mail, we speak for just about everyone we know in Gunnison County, as we all hold the same opinion. We are adamantly against the proposal to lease lands in the North Fork Valley for oil and gas interests, especially as regards the fracking methods. ADAMANTLY against!

Clarifying police chief’s salary

Dear Editor:

Eric Goold in his letter (DCI 12/27/2012) misquotes me and then proceeds to pronounce it inaccurate. What I said was, "Paonia has the highest paid small town police chief in Colorado."

Envisioning a prosperous future for Delta

Dear Editor:

Fellow citizens of Delta. I consider it an honor and privilege to live here while raising my family in our town. As I look to our future as a community, there are two pressing developments before us right now on which I believe we are making grave, irreparable decisions of error, which we will sorely regret if we don't dream, plan and act responsibly with vision RIGHT NOW, as development progresses in the immediate months ahead.

Don’t throw senior citizens under the bus

Dear Editor:

With the consideration of altering the CPI calculations format, negative impacts upon cost of living adjustments (COLAs) for Social Security beneficiaries, both present and future, is a distinct possibility. My impression when I cast my ballot back on Nov. 6 was that Social Security was completely "off the table" in current and future budget negotiations concerning the so-called "fiscal cliff."

Oil/gas development requires a thoughtful approach

Dear Editor:

It appears as though the people of Colorado are getting progressively more agitated at what is perceived to be an intransigent industry bent on maximizing profit regardless of the cost to the public. It is indisputable that the gas industry as well as many others has long used "privatize the profits, socialize the costs" as strategies to best hew to their shareholder's fiduciary requirements.

Paonia council is determined to fix problems

Dear Editor:

On Dec. 11, the Paonia Town Council passed the budget for 2013. The budget process took well over three months to complete, during which the board of trustees conducted a thorough review of revenues and expenses for the town. In that time, and at the last council meeting, some disturbing revelations came to light.

Devil’s Thumb offers many benefits to area residents

Dear Editor:

We should all be thankful for the hard work the Delta City Council has done, and continues to do, to keep the City of Delta growing and progressing in the most responsible manner possible. In an effort to do so, council members must always take into consideration the wishes and desires of the residents and make some tough decisions on what is best.
