A session could come as early as February.

The issue of the new treatment plant's location came up during the board's December meeting. A constituent question from town resident Dee Anstine initiated the discussion.

Anstine asked the trustees why the town isn't considering construction of a new wastewater treatment plant on the site of the current sewer lagoons, property the town already owns.

Trustees replied that the town is being prohibited by state and federal officials from discharging its sewer effluent into the Hart's Basin drainage where the current lagoons are located. That is because of the negative effects being caused to Fruitgrowers Reservoir.

New sites for the wastewater plant will have to be evaluated on the basis of their access to Surface Creek, which will take the new plant's effluent discharge.

The state and the EPA want Cedaredge out of the Hart's Basin drainage: "This goes back 15 years," said trustee Ray Hanson.

Mayor Pat Means explained that the town board has been struggling for two years with issues like the one Anstine raised. She promised a community forum on the treatment plant issues that will take place after the first of the year, possibly as early as February.
