Delta has a community wildfire protection plan that assists individual homeowners and communities of neighbors in making private property improvements that can help prevent property loss in the event of wildfire.

Under the Community Wildfire Protection Program, private homeowners can get up to 90 percent of mitigation work costs paid for with available grants. The average cost share on projects in Delta County is 88 percent, because sometimes homeowners want extra work included in a project that isn't covered under the program's funding guidelines.

Delta County's participation in the community wildfire protection plan has increased between 2011 and 2012.
In an update report to the Board of County Commissioners last month, Lilia Falk with the West Region Wildfire Council in Montrose said the number of Delta County homeowner acres involved in mitigation treatments increased from 42 in 2011 to 135 in 2012.

For information on the program, Falk can be reached in Montrose at 249-9051 ext. 125.
