“The law” came up short in a fund-raising basketball game against Cedaredge High School faculty, but the real winner of the April 5 event was the CHS athletic department. Just over $1,000 was raised for the school’s athletic programs. The event was organized by Officer Chris Curtis, who recruited officers from the Delta Police Department, Delta County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol to compete against CHS teachers. Curtis said he was overwhelmed by the support of the community and the businesses that donated prizes for the event. This basketball game featured some unique rules. Players who committed a foul ended up in “jail,” while those taking the foul shot had to turn their backs to the basket. “X” marked the spot near half-court where players could earn five points for sinking a long shot. And, of course, there were doughnuts to distract the officers from the game (right).
