An outside-of-town water customer came to the Cedaredge Town Board hoping for "a better deal" on a water bill adjustment than the town staff had offered.
The couple received a forgiveness of $186 from the trustees at their May 16 meeting.
They had requested a 75 percent write-off on their $457 bill.
Under certain conditions, town staff may authorize up to a 50 percent forgiveness in charges for water leak overages. The couple's water bill had been run up without their knowledge by a faulty internal toilet tank valve during their four-month absence from home.
The couple knew that the town board had recently granted a 100 percent forgiveness on a million-gallon-plus water overage charge suffered by a neighborhood system north of town. So the couple came to the trustees hoping to get the same deal.
An inspection of the couple's property by a public works employee revealed that a livestock watering tank there lacked a required backflow preventer. Trustees approved the water bill overage forgiveness to be credited only after installation and inspection of an approved backflow check device to prevent cross contamination of the municipal system from the livestock watering setup.blog comments powered by Disqus
