Memories in the Making (MIM) is an art program designed for residents in care centers, living with Alzheimer's disease and/or related dementia. The focus of the program is an outlet for creative expression, to encourage communication through painting, to provide sensory stimulation and to increase self-esteem through the creation of something of value.
Results are pictorial images with messages that can often be understood by caregivers, family members and the viewing public. The finished work is often more "contemporary" or abstract than traditional in style, though some of the artists may choose to use a small paintbrush to draw with paint for an easy-to-recognize drawing. The plan is to assemble all of each resident's artwork into a book to be given to the artist's family.
Instructor Mary Meehan, a retired art teacher, attended a course offered by the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter and has been volunteering to facilitate the program at Horizons Care Center for the past six months. She has taught art classes for other residents at Horizons prior to this present commitment.blog comments powered by Disqus
