Saturday, June 29, was a time to renew friendships and remember times gone by. Everyone who ever attended Fairview School was invited to breakfast at the Gunnison River Pleasure Park near Hotchkiss.
The school no longer exists but many memories live on and are recalled each year at the school's annual reunion.
Fairview School was located between Austin and Cory with only two rooms when it was built in 1904 to accommodate grades 1-8. More rooms were added as more and more families settled in the area. Fairview closed in 1966 when rural schools in the county's school district were consolidated. The building is gone though memories remain.
This year's planning committee included Ray Drysdale, Marsha Thomas, Connie Hutchinson, June Mills, Meriddeth Von Berg, Marilyn Boyd and Sharon Fuller.
Three former students of Fairview have attended all 27 school reunions — T.J. Harshman, June Mills and Ray Drysdale.
The pioneer family of Hover Dixon received the special honor of being named to the Fairview Wall of Fame. A framed history of the family along with photos will be hung in the Fairview Corner at Orchard City Town Hall.
The traveling "no name award" (for lack of a better name) was given to Betty Hallock Starr — the award, a topiary made up of lovely fake flowers.
The coveted "softball" trophy award was presented to K. Don Thompson with the usual instructions to inscribe his name on the ball, display it in a prominent place and return it to be awarded again next year.
Ray Drysdale was presented with a framed collage of photos and memorabilia representing bits and pieces of his "life to remember."
Caroline Jagodinski and her cooking crew received recognition for serving the reunion breakfasts for this and past years. Everyone applauded as they paraded among the tables.
A Friendship Chain patterned quilt, made by MaryLee Pratte, was won in a drawing by Val Drysdale.
"Slates, Chalk, & Inkwells" is a recently published history of schools in Colorado's Uncompahgre Valley. The author, Greta Hemstrom, was present to sign copies and talk of the book's contents.
Fairview School's 28th reunion will be held on the last Saturday of June, 2014.blog comments powered by Disqus
