On Saturday, Sept. 14, Boy Scout Troop 497 of Cedaredge will be hosting the 2013 Grand Mesa Bear Chase Trail Run at the County Line Ski Area on the Grand Mesa.
Registrations are being accepted at www.bearchase.agdevices.com.
Entrants can choose from a four-mile trail, eight-mile trail, or half marathon.
Proceeds from this race will help the troop attend summer camp in 2014 as well as fund other activities such as merit badge rally, klondike, and biathlon.
Scoutmaster Rick Schaefer explains the difference between other trail runs and the Grand Mesa Bear Chase event. "Most 5k runs are run on the street. Even when billed as a trail run, they are often run on trails you could drive a car on or nice smooth gravel bike paths and the such."
This event will be a true "trail" run: logging roads, single track, maybe a little water involved, he added.
"Plus it is actually a four-mile loop, not 5k. The Forest Service specs on the trail are almost a mile off. So one loop is four miles, two loops is eight miles, and three loops will be considered the half marathon," Schaefer said.
All proceeds will benefit BSA Troop 497. Troop 497 is very involved with its community, in helping with VFW burial services by providing a bugler to play Taps when their own is not available, serving at VFW pancake breakfasts for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, and the Serenity Run. We also present the Colors at the annual DMEA meeting and the Relay for Life in Delta. The scouts enjoy their frequent camp outs, and are excited when we get new members to share the activities with.
The Troop is chartered by The Father's House in Cedaredge where we have most of our meetings. The troop makes special mention and thanks to Rick Schaefer for leading the Troop for over a decade, although his own Scout has since grown up and moved on.
All registrations are handled through Active.com. Come on out and join us for a fun run on the beautiful grand Mesa and support a good cause in the process.
