The Surface Creek community opened its generous heart for a fund raiser last month that will benefit "wounded warriors" and other handicapped individuals.
RJ's Steakhouse was the scene for the event that drew local bands, businesses, friends and neighbors together on Aug. 18 for the fund raiser that succeeded far beyond its goal.
The event raised over $3,800 for the purchase of a handicapped "port-a-potty" that will be installed permanently at the Therapeutic Riding Center located east of Montrose. Money raised over and above the need was donated to the Center's ongoing program support. The Center hosts events for "wounded warriors," and also serves individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.
There was a lot of excitement last week on Sept. 20 when the handicapped unit was brought to RJ's on Highway 65 for a showing before it was taken on to Montrose County for installation.
The idea for a fund raiser to meet the need originated from a conversation between Rich Dorning, co-owner of RJ's, and Rachel Leonard of Double J Disposal in Austin.
One idea led to another, and the fund raiser was "go." The event attracted a long list of donors and supporters which included entertainment provided by three local bands: Desert Moon, The Shift, and Cimmaron.
There was a silent auction and event ticket sales that provided funds for the cause, and RJ's owners, Dorning and wife Linda, provided a barbecue rib feast for all their generous guests.
The following businesses and individuals donated items for the silent auction: Fat Cat Pottery, Millennium Wellness, Dragonfire Creations, Leta Lopez, Eileen Kahn, Horsefly Brewery, Chow Down Pet Supply, Murdocks, John Bish, Larry Maybon, JoAnn Weatherly, Kevin Nahler, Drost Chocolates, Double D Ranch, Elk Ridge Trail Rides, Montrose Therapeutic Riding Center, Color Connection Salon, Starr's Guitars, Linda Dorning, Homestead Meats, Black Canyon Ranch, Black Canyon Corner Store, Doghouse Espresso, Benson Brothers Aggregate, Hi Country Beverage, Rayna Stout, Republic National Distributors, Rusty Spur Ranch, Johnnie Walker Purses, LaurieAnn and Gary Nelson, Joanna Barrien, French Insurance and Financial Services, and Bob Paige.blog comments powered by Disqus
