Cedaredge teacher Michele Gillis had a front row seat as a helicopter from Olathe Spray Service dipped water from a pond on her property west of Cedaredge on Ute Trail Road. She captured the photo as she and some neighbors gathered in the open space around the pond while firefighters battled a wildfire on Friday, June 8. Gillis said winds were driving the fire towards their home, and they had gathered their horses and moved them near the water. The assistance of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft from Olathe Spray Service was critical and essential to the successful fire fighting effort, said Kevin Walker, Cedaredge fire chief. “They were able to come over and knock the big flames down so our ground crews could get in and attack the fire,” he said.
