This fall the top three teams in the Class 1A Western Slope League in football were all from Delta County. Paonia, Hotchkiss and Cedaredge finished one, two and three, respectively, in the six-team league.
Hotchkiss was eliminated from state playoffs in the quarterfinals, and Paonia won its first state football title since 1969.
This year, more than half of the players named to the league's All-Conference teams are from Delta County.
Paonia athletes named to the all-conference first team include seniors Will Austin and Drewe Lee. Juniors named to the first team included Joel Simianer, Josh Kimball, Logan Schopp, Dylan Geisler and Chase Park.
Hotchkiss honorees include seniors Colton Pearce, Caleb Schelle, Chris Allen and Hank Edwards. Junior first-teamers are Alex Smith, Devan Rupe and Duncan Turnbull.
The 2014 Cedaredge first-team selectees include seniors Peter Williamson, Kyle Ward, Beau Hebert and Alejandro Alejandre and junior Corey Reynolds.
There were a number of players named to the honorable mention team. Paonia's selections included seniors Ty Coats, Tony Darling, and Tristan Littlejohn. Junior Josh Altman also made the list.
Hotchkiss honorable mention players are senior Ross LeValley, junior Tristen Todd and sophomore Jaden Simpson.
For the Cedaredge Bruins, seniors Taber Anderson and Austin Gartman made the list along with junior Xander Camp.
The 2013 Kicker of the Year award belonged to Bryce Klaseen of Cedaredge.
Hotchkiss' River Panish was the Punter of the Year.
This year's Player of the Year went to Paonia's Taylor Walters. Paonia High School coach Brent McRae earned honors as the 2013 Coach of the Year.
