Faline Farmer receives a serve against Rifle last Friday. Hotchkiss upset the visiting Lady Bears in three sets.
In a crowd-pleasing three-game match, the Lady Bulldogs upset the visiting Lady Bears of Rifle last Friday night (25-27, 22-25, 19-25).

After exchanging leads several times in the opening game, the teams were tied at 24 all.

Hotchkiss took a one-point lead on an attack error by Rifle, then handed Rifle a point on an error to tie the game at 25. Hotchkiss had a side-out after a kill shot by Darryl Batt and after a brief volley the Lady Bears handed Hotchkiss the game on an illegal block.

Game two was another nail-biter, with Hotchkiss having a slim one-point lead at 18-17. With Faline Farmer serving, Rifle committed another error, and Farmer followed up with an ace. Rifle regained the serve, but on the first set Kristina Deloury slammed a kill shot into the back court. Rifle re-gained control and added two quick points to trail 22-20. Deloury made another kill, and on the next serve, Savannah Rocha caught Rifle off guard by sending a kill shot from the middle into the back corner.

Hotchkiss trailed 12-9 in game three, but scored five consecutive points to re-take the lead. Batt, Rocha and Ciara Beegle all contributed a kill to the 25-19 win in game three. Deloury added two more, and Sadie Smith made her second kill of the game for the win.

The win brought Hotchkiss' season record to 3-6 overall, 1-2 in 2A Western Slope League play. For a team that could barely pull off a win the last two seasons, the win was a big victory.

"It feels good to win," said Farmer, a senior designated setter and four-year player. "I think we've all come together. We've just stepped it up this year." Even in most of their losses, "We're right there in every game."

"They just believed in themselves," said first-year head coach Kendal Roberts. They didn't get down. There were no outstanding players, added Roberts. "Just a team effort, which is what we're looking for."

The celebration was short-lived, with Hotchkiss losing in three at Plateau Valley (21-25, 24-26, 20-25).

Hotchkiss had a re-match Tuesday against Cedaredge (scores were not available at press time). They travel this Saturday to Vail Christian (4-5, 0-2, 1A WSL).

On Oct. 2, Paonia and Hotchkiss will celebrate the fourth annual Pink Night! game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Paonia High School. The event includes drawings, games, prizes and a lot of pink. All proceeds go to Delta County Hospice. Games begin at 4 p.m. For details, call Kriss at 527-4882.
