Hotchkiss plays ‘best game’ in 48-20 win over Monte Vista

The Bulldogs played what head coach Zac Lemon described as "... our best game by far," defeating Monte Vista Friday, 48-20, at Monte Vista.

It was the first loss of the season for the Pirates (3-1), who are two-time defending Southern Peaks League champions and are currently in a three-way tie for first place heading into league play.

A week earlier Hotchkiss defeated Southern Peak's Del Norte (3-1), 42-12, in Del Norte.

Jacobe Galley rushed for 292 yards and four touchdowns against Monte Vista, including a 90-yard scoring run. He was 4-6 in PATs.

Hardin "had a great game running, passing and leading," said Lemon. He was 4-10 for 71 yards and two touchdown passes, including a 30-yard scoring pass to Conner Beard and a 10-yard pass play to Galley. Trenton Tamayo contributed a 2-point conversion run and had eight carries for 70 yards.

The Bulldogs will host the league opener this Friday at 7 p.m. against the Cedaredge Bruins, one of two new teams in the 1A Western Slope League, who are 3-1 following a 38-0 win at Dolores on Sept. 14. They should be well-rested following a week-four bye.

The Bulldog defense will have to contain lead rushers Reid Gates and Carter Wasser, who have combined for almost 700 of the Bruins 800 yards rushing on the season. Quarterback Dante Markley leads the league in passing with 426 yards.

"The Cedaredge game is a big one," said Lemon. It could determine the league championship, "But there's a lot of season left and anything can happen."
