Photo by Tamie Meck Paonia’s Zach Milner and Hotchkiss’ Dustin Head circle the mat in their 152 pound match during the Delta Invitational Wrestling Tournament last week.Hotchkiss placed six wrestlers at Saturday's Delta Panther Invitational wrestling tournament. They earned 95.5 points to place seventh in the 12-team tournament.
Hotchkiss was open in the 145, 195, 220 and 285 weights.
Senior 160-pounder Joe Boyle went 4-1 to place third. Boyle, a returning state qualifier, lost his only match to Tray Sickels of Nucla, who won the tournament and was named the tournament outstanding wrestler in the upper weights. Boyle posted wins over Durango, Cedaredge and Delta to advance to the final round, where he defeated Michael Salazar of Grand Valley by technical fall.
Returning state qualifier Dustin Head also placed third. Head lost his only match of the day to William Hinkle of Grand Valley. Head opened with a 10-6 win over Matt Hayden of Paonia, then pinned Zach Milner in 2:02 to advance to the finals, where he won by forfeit over Hayden, who had completed the maximum five matches for the day.
Senior 170-pounder Tony Ibarra came up against Paonia junior Will Austin in an early round, with Austin winning by pinfall (1:45).
Ibarra moved to the consolation bracket, where he pinned Riley Hutton of Olathe in just under a minute, then pinned Cordell Stroud of Delta in 31 seconds.
Ibarra again met Austin, who pinned him for the second time (1:47). Ibarra finished fourth.
Jake Hubbell opened with two wins at 106 pounds, including a pin late in the second round over Uriel Gonzalez of Basalt, and a win by major decision over Paonia's Nolan Jones.
Hubbell faced Jones again in the consolation round and won with a first-round pin to place fifth.
Eric Steckel opened with a pin over Javier Nunez of Rifle, then fell to Trenton Gustafson of Cortez. (Gustafson was 4-0 for the tournament win).
Steckel then pinned Nelson Bell of Coal Ridge in 1:58 to advance to the finals. He lost to Kyle Collins of Delta to place fourth.
Garrett Toothaker opened with a 4-2 loss to David Brown of Delta, then pinned Lane Nelson of Coal Ridge in 44 seconds.
Toothaker lasted 2:27 against second-ranked Austin Shank of Olathe and moved on to the consolation round.
Also making his way through the bracket was Wyatt Toothaker of Cedaredge, who opened with a loss to Shank. Wyatt then defeated Jacob Hegwood of Grand Valley and Fabian Gonzalez of Basalt before falling to Brown in 1:24.
That put the two Toothakers, who are cousins, on the mat wrestling for fifth place.
Garrett, a junior, walked away with the win after pinning Wyatt, a sophomore, in the first round. Hotchkiss will compete this weekend at the Warrior Classic.
