HHS struggles at Warrior

Boyle was 2-2 at the tournament and was one of two Bulldogs to advance to day-two competition. In the opening seconds of Joe Boyle's Saturday morning match against Fruita Monument's 152-pounder Kaden Fife, the two collided on a take-down attempt. Fife's head gear cut a gash just above Boyle's right eye.

After a quick bandaging of his wound, Boyle wrestled tough against the 5A wrestler, but got caught late in the second round to get pinned. Boyle finished the tournament at 2-2. He was the Bulldogs' last chance at placing at the 35th annual Warrior Classic tournament.

Earlier on, Garrett Toothaker, the only other Hotchkiss wrestler to advance after a grueling opening day of the two-day, all-class tournament, had fallen to Jared Flores, a state-ranked wrestler from Green River, Wyo. "I got caught in a headlock and couldn't get out of it," said Toothaker. Looking at the bright side, "I still have a winning record."

Toothaker opened Friday's competition with a pin in 1 minute, 26 seconds over Mauricio Paez of Center. Next in the bracket was David Baxter, an eighth-ranked wrestler for 4A Pueblo South. Toothaker, who went into the tournament ranked ninth, went the full three rounds against Baxter in the 6-4 loss. Toothaker wrestled to a 9-5 win over Ashlee Griffiths of Moffat County, and pinned Johnathan Tavar of Cortez in 24 seconds to advance to Saturday's competition.

Toothaker said he wanted to earn a win for the team. "There's a lot of weight on your shoulders," he said after Saturday's loss.

Hotchkiss wrestled two and out at 106, 128, 132, 138, 170, 195 and 220. At 145, Brandon Beck opened with a loss to Durango, then pinned Justin Sanders of Pueblo Centennial in 4:39. Beck ended with a loss to Hayden Jones of Douglas County

At 160, Dustin Head pinned Brian Roberts of Pueblo Centennial in 1:06 to open the tournament, then lost in an 11-3 decision to Kyle Soulka of Falcon, who placed second in the tournament.

And Erik Steckel lost early on to Mountain Valley, defeated Austin Sailas of Fort Lupton, then lost by pinfall to Cody Driver of Fountain Fort Carson.

Hotchkiss had open weights at 120 and 285 pounds.
