The Hotchkiss girls' tennis team opened its season on March 7 at Glenwood Springs. Glenwood claimed a 5-2 win, but Hotchkiss was only a few points away from a team win, said coach Brian Benson, who saw his team's performance as "a good start for us.
We only have a couple of girls with varsity experience, so I was a little afraid of how it might turn out."
The team's wins came at 1 doubles, where Lexey Padilla and Shelby Rogers won "a terrific match," defeating Glenwood 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.
At 2 doubles, Bree Vernon and Tijay Lehman opened the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win. "This was a really even match-up with Glenwood," said Benson. "Bree and Tijay came through at the clutch times."
In her first season as a singles player, 1 singles Ciara Beegle lost her opening match, 1-6, 0-6, to Sarai Zilm, one of the top-ranked singles players in the Western Slope region.

At 3 singles, Mandi Chermak lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Sadie Dickinson. Chermak "played some outstanding tennis," said Benson, but was edged out by Dickinson.
Three doubles team Carli Gallegos and Moriah Rodstrom also took their match to three sets for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-10 loss to Hannah Nilsson and Lindsay Hoffman of Glenwood. And at 4 doubles, Carlyn Toothaker and Lexi Arroyo lost, 5-7, 6-2, to Kenia Farias and Corrine Passey.
