Hotchkiss set a new record in the race by shaving five seconds off the old time.This year's Bulldog track team drew roughly 55 student-athletes to its roster. While a handful of athletes were absent from Saturday's Delta Invitational meet, the boys' team earned 68 points and one gold to finish fourth overall, and the girls finished fifth with 59 points and claimed three golds and a meet record.
Girls' results
The Hotchkiss girls' 3200-meter relay team of Natalie Anderson, Sophia Schelle, Mae Anderson and Jenni Celis broke the meet record, set by Glenwood Springs in 2012, by 5 seconds, finishing in 10 minutes, 14.17 seconds to win the event.
After trailing Delta throughout most of the race, Celis overtook Cleo Whiting about 200 meters into the last leg of the race. She never looked back.
The team of two juniors (Anderson and Celis) and two freshmen hopes to improve its time once it gets in better shape, said Anderson. She and Celis were still playing basketball a week ago and just started conditioning for track last week. The foursome is used to running together, and were four-fifths of last fall's state champion cross country team.
The 1600-meter team of Anderson, Celis, Katie Parsons and Schelle also claimed the gold with a time of 4:17.07 — 2 seconds shy of the meet record. And Kelli Buhrdorf, Arial Duncan, Schelle and Parsons out- paced Palisade by more than a second to win the 800m relay with a time of 1:56.38.
Also earning points was the 800m sprint medley team of Duncan, Cialee Daniels, Brielle Palmer and Kenley Derby which placed fourth; Derby also finished seventh in the 800m run.
Buhrdorf, a 2012 state qualifier, placed fifth in the 100m with a time of 13.69. Daniels placed seventh in the high jump, and Daryl Batt threw the discus 81 feet, 8 inches to place sixth.
Boys' results
Senior Cody Bartlett topped the No. 2 runner by 15 seconds and set a personal best time of 10:32.89 to win the 3200m run Saturday. The team of Bartlett, Keegan Palmer, Kurt Katzdorn and Alex Smith placed second behind Delta in the 1600m relay with a time of 3:43.85.

Katzdorn finished the 1600m in 5:06.76 to place third out of a field of 31 competitors. Palmer set a personal best time to finish seventh in the 300m hurdles.
The 400m sprint relay team of Jacob Schreiner, Caleb Schelle, Trenton Tamayo and Mason Oxford placed sixth. The 800m team of Devin Spedon, Ulises Mendoza, Damon Bartling and Cameron Matus also finished sixth.
Hotchkiss earned more than 20 points in the jumping pits. Palmer and River Panish finished one and two in the triple jump — Palmer with a distance of 38 feet, 8.75 inches, and Panish 36 feet, 4 inches. In the long jump, Chris Allen cleared 18-08.5 to place fifth and Panish cleared the 18-foot mark to place eighth. In his first high jump competition, Allen cleared 5 feet, 3 inches to place eighth.
In throwing, Oxford fell just short of last year's personal best, hitting a mark of 120 feet, 8 inches to place third out of a field of 42 throwers in the discus.
Hotchkiss will host its annual invitational meet this Saturday.
