The Hotchkiss Bulldogs are seeded second heading into this week's 2A District 2 baseball tournament. Hotchkiss last won a district championship in 2011 when they claimed the 3A District 3 title; they went on to place fourth at state.
This is the first season in the Class 2A WSL for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs ended the season with a non-league 3-2 loss last Tuesday to Olathe. The Pirates opened with a three-run first inning and held the Bulldogs scoreless until the sixth inning, with seniors Brayden Wilson and Russ Evens scoring runs. The Bulldogs had three hits, with Cesar Gonzales, Tye Bayles and Hank Edwards all going 1 for 4 for the game.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-6, 8-4 record and in second place in the 2A Western Slope League, behind Paonia. They were the only team in the league to defeat Paonia, with a 10-3 win on April 13.
The top three teams from the WSL and SJL will compete in this week's tournament. Hotchkiss faces Ignacio (3-14 overall, 0-9 2A San Juan Basin League) at 11 a.m. Friday in Game 2 of the tournament. The winner will advance to the district semifinals against Nucla (9-4, 8-1) at 4 p.m. Friday. Nucla finished in first place in the San Juan League, ahead of Dolores.
In a May 4 pigtail game, Rangely trounced Meeker, 11-3 to advance to game 1 of the tournament. Senior Toby Gasper was 3-4 for the game with a home run and two RBIs. Rangely (6-14, 4-8) will face Dolores (7-6, 5-4 SJL) at 8:30 a.m. Friday. The winner will advance to the semifinal game against Paonia (14-5, 11-1). The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. All games will be played at Delta High School.
