c05 hhstr1Photo by Tamie Meck Kylie Hodges releases the discus at the Bruin Invitational. Hodges will compete in both the discus and shot put at this week’s state 2A track meet in Lakewood. Teammate Daryl Batt had her best throw of the season and is going to state in the discus.The Hotchkiss boys team won four individual events and one relay and scored 127 points to win the 2A Western Slope League track meet.

Senior Cody Bartlett scored 30 points by winning three individual events, including the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 1.28 seconds), the 1600m (4:31.41) and the 3200m with a new WSL meet record of 9:56.69.

HHS has strong track teams

Smith finished second and jumped from 20th in 2A state rankings to fourth. Paonia’s Josiah Spano (far left) placed fourth and moved into the top 18 in state. Cedaredge’s Ryan Latta (third from right) placed fifth.Competing against one of the fastest runners in the state has its benefits. In Friday's 400-meter race at Cedaredge, sophomore Alex Smith kept pace with Coal Ridge's Raul Oyarzabal, ranked first in 3A Western Slope competition and seventh in state, and finished second.

Bulldogs seeded 2nd going to 2A districts

b09 hhsbbPhoto by Tamie Meck Hotchkiss freshman pitcher Cesar Gonzales is ranked fourth in state in strikeouts with 66 K in 38 innings of work. The Bulldogs will be a force at this week’s 2A District 2 tournament opening Friday at Delta High School. Hotchkiss plays Ignacio at 11 a.m. Friday.The Hotchkiss Bulldogs are seeded second heading into this week's 2A District 2 baseball tournament. Hotchkiss last won a district championship in 2011 when they claimed the 3A District 3 title; they went on to place fourth at state.

Hotchkiss has strong finish in tennis; regional play up next

The Hotchkiss girls wrapped up regulation play this week with losses to Aspen and Montrose.

Bulldogs end league play after split with Rangely team

b07 hhsbbPhoto by Tamie Meck Hotchkiss outfielder/pitcher Cole Carvill is one of two freshmen in the Bulldog lineup this season. The Bulldogs (second place in 2A WSL) completed their regular season yesterday against Olathe. District tournament play begins May 11 in Delta.Four runs in the seventh inning lifted Rangely to a 7-6 upset win Friday over the visiting Hotchkiss Bulldogs. Hotchkiss opened the game with three runs in the first inning, then took a 6-4 lead with three more runs in the sixth.

HHS breaks track marks

At Friday's Montrose Invitational, the junior sprinter/mid-distance runner ran the 800-meter in two minutes, 14.24 seconds for the win and a new meet record.

Bulldogs second in 2A WSL play

Hotchkiss (11-4, 7-3) is in second place in the WSL following 15-5, 9-2 wins Saturday against Meeker (1-7, 1-7).

The double-header games were moved to Canyon View Park in Grand Junction due to last week's heavy snows in northern Colorado.

HHS thinclads set trio of marks at Wertman

Bartlett and Tiedeman placed first and second respectively and are ranked first and second in the 2A Western Slope League.The Hotchkiss girls' track team had four first-place showings and scored 77 points to place fourth at the 13-team Phil Wertman Invitational, held Friday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. The girls also broke meet records in two events.
