The Olathe Pirates were full of confidence heading into Saturday's 3A District 3 baseball tournament at Hotchkiss. They'd finished the season with a 14-5 record and in third place in the Western Slope League.
The Hotchkiss track teams finished the last regular meet on a high note, claiming their share of wins and breaking a total of six meet records at last Friday's Bruin Invitational.
Jenni Celis shattered the old record in the 400-meter dash by almost four seconds, winning the event in 58.52 seconds.
Hotchkiss will enter the district baseball tournament in a tie for first place in the 3A Western Slope League with Rifle after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday over visiting Coal Ridge. The Dogs put both games away in five innings, and both games ended on a walk.
After suffering their first loss of the season to Hotchkiss in early April and falling to 2A Paonia on April 16, the Cedaredge Bruins were hoping to halt a three-game losing streak at Hotchkiss on April 24.
The game was also a battle for second place in the 3A Western Slope League, which slipped out of the Bruins' hands after twin losses to first place Rifle the prior weekend.
