The Bulldogs wrestling team won two championships — both in lower weights, and placed six wrestlers to take fifth place at Saturday's Eagle Valley Invitational. At 113 pounds, senior Garrett Toothaker (11-4) was favored to win the tournament and was 3-0 for the day, pinning Raul Lopez of Eagle Valley in 53 seconds for the championship.
The Rangely boys basketball team probably expected trouble from Hotchkiss, but it wasn't prepared for River Panish. The junior guard put up a game-high 24 points, including 19 points in the first half, to lift the Bulldogs to a 57-43 non-conference win Saturday over Rangely (6-2).
Katie Richards was deadly from the paint. The junior post player scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Hotchkiss girls basketball team, which shot five three-pointers, to defeat Rangely, 59-23, Saturday.
The Hotchkiss girls basketball team expected to open the season at home against Paonia, but the rivalry games are all rescheduled for Jan. 21.
Hotchkiss opens the new year with a 3-2 record.
