Bulldogs score big grid win at Del Norte

Bulldog senior running back Jacobe Galley carries for a first down before being tackled by the Buena Vista defense in a game played on Sept. 7 in Hotchkiss. On Saturday, against the Del Norte Tigers, Galley scored 32 points in the Bulldogs’ 42-12 win in Del Norte. Galley had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to begin the second half.
After a narrow season-opening win at Olathe and a three-point loss at home to No. 1 Buena Vista, the Bulldogs kicked their game into high gear Saturday, defeating Del Norte 42-12, at Del Norte.

It was the first loss of the season for the Tigers (2-1 overall, 0-0 Southern Peaks League), who were also celebrating their homecoming.

Hotchkiss girls sixth in track

Savannah Rocha carries the baton in the 800-meter relay prelims. Rocha, a junior, also qualified for state in the high jump but had to scratch due to an injury.
The Hotchkiss girls track team earned 47 points to place sixth at last week's state 3A track meet. Sophomores Natalie Anderson and Jenni Celis combined in individual events for 31 of those points.

HHS track teams excel

Hotchkiss 800m runner Cody Bartlett edges Aaron Wagler of Rifle to win the 3A WSL 800m dash. Bartlett, who placed second in the 1600, posted new personal records and state qualifying times in both events.
Hotchkiss mid-distance runner Cody Bartlett wasn't expected to win at last week's 3A Western Slope League track meet. Distance coach Richard Hypio said he knew Bartlett would better his times in the 800- and 1600-meter runs, and probably place.

‘Dogs’ ousted by Pirates

The Olathe Pirates were full of confidence heading into Saturday's 3A District 3 baseball tournament at Hotchkiss. They'd finished the season with a 14-5 record and in third place in the Western Slope League.

Bulldogs set new records

b10_hhstrThe Hotchkiss track teams finished the last regular meet on a high note, claiming their share of wins and breaking a total of six meet records at last Friday's Bruin Invitational.

Jenni Celis shattered the old record in the 400-meter dash by almost four seconds, winning the event in 58.52 seconds.

Dogs tied for first in 3A WSL; to host tourney

Bulldog Brayden Wilson connects for a base hit against Coal Ridge Saturday, which was also Wilson’s 17th birthday. The Bulldogs swept the double- header to enter district play in a tie for first place with Rifle.
Hotchkiss will enter the district baseball tournament in a tie for first place in the 3A Western Slope League with Rifle after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday over visiting Coal Ridge. The Dogs put both games away in five innings, and both games ended on a walk.

Macias pitches ‘Dogs’ to win

Bulldog Conner Beard slides safely into second base for a double as his fingertips reach the bag just under the tag of Cedaredge shortstop Trent Walker. For the second time this season, the Bulldogs came out on top against the Bruins, claiming a 3-1 win at Hotchkiss on April 24. The two teams end regular season play this weekend with Cedaredge hosting Olathe and Hotchkiss Coal Ridge.
After suffering their first loss of the season to Hotchkiss in early April and falling to 2A Paonia on April 16, the Cedaredge Bruins were hoping to halt a three-game losing streak at Hotchkiss on April 24.

The game was also a battle for second place in the 3A Western Slope League, which slipped out of the Bruins' hands after twin losses to first place Rifle the prior weekend.

Hotchkiss tied atop 3A WSL

The entire Hotchkiss baseball team awaits the arrival of Jacobe Galley after he clouted a grand slam home run against Basalt’s Longhorns in game one of doubleheader action last Saturday in Basalt. Galley’s blast came in the second inning and gave Hotchkiss a 7-1 lead. The two wins in Basalt enabled the Bulldogs to pull even (15-2) with Rifle after a Bear’s loss to Gunnison.
The weekend couldn't have gone any better. After defeating Cedaredge on April 24 (see related story) and claiming wins over Basalt Saturday and Aspen Monday, the Bulldogs are tied for first in 3A Western Slope League competition.
