Cedaredge 3S player Brianna Henrie returns a shot to Amber Rankin of Hotchkiss. The Lady Bruins and Lady Bulldogs faced off in the final matches of the season before heading into regional competition, which begins Thursday morning.
All four Delta County tennis teams wrapped up scheduled matches last Thursday, with Hotchkiss edging out Cedaredge, 4-3, and Delta dominating Paonia.

The 4A Region 8 tournament, which is being hosted by Delta, is expected to be tough for all four schools.

Hotchkiss tracksters on track for 3A state meet

Beth Wood hands off to Arial Duncan in Saturday’s 800m sprint medley relay. The Hotchkiss girls team is hoping for a repeat state championship in the event.
With just one more meet remaining before league competition, the Hotchkiss boys 1600- and 3200-meter relay teams are still in the top 10 in state Class 3A rankings.

At Saturday's Montrose Invitational, the 1600m team of Dylan Hill, Palmer Keegan, Braeden Horton and Alex Smith placed third, as did the 3200m team of Tell Hawk, Vikash Hypio, Smith and Cody Bartlett.

HHS’ Horton to miss state track

Braeden Horton sprints to the finish in the 100-meter dash at Saturday’s Montrose Invitational. The senior has qualified for state in relays, but he won’t be at the state meet. He is among four Hotchkiss students attending a science fair instead.
Whether he's throwing a football in the state playoffs or sprinting the 100-meter dash, Braeden Horton's competitive nature won't let him give anything but all he's got. Horton is a member of three sprint relay teams for Hotchkiss, including the 1600-meter team that is all but guaranteed a trip to this year's 3A state track meet.

HHS to make up baseball games

The Hotchkiss Bulldogs lost out on playing a baseball doubleheader with Aspen back in March. The two games are crucial to Hotchkiss' record and the Bulldogs will host a conference doubleheader against Aspen, at 2 and 4 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the K-8 baseball field in Hotchkiss.

Pitcher Edgar Macias gives Bulldogs momentum

Brayden Wilson hit his first homerun of the season and Ryan Pachl was 3 for 4 in the Bulldogs' two-game sweep Saturday against Gunnison.

"That helps a lot," said head coach Jason Yantzer, whose team won 10-7, 10-5, despite being down two key players.

Strong relay teams rely heavily on handoffs

It's something that a lot of relay runners take for granted, until they mess it up.

It's the handoff, also known as the exchange, and it can make or break a relay team's success.

Hotchkiss racers making top 18 at midway point

The Hotchkiss girls team placed first in four events and earned 52.5 points to place fifth overall at the Frank Woodburn Invitational track and field meet.

The 1600-meter relay team of Savannah Rocha, Natalie Anderson, Jenni Celis and Aleksus Wilson not only won, their time of 4:11.24 topped all other times in state 3A competition, according to Max Preps (maxpreps.com).

Central, Durango win Delta Invite Tennis finals

The 2012 Delta Invitational Tennis Tournament survived the blustery winds of Friday (April 6) and finished tournament play on Saturday under sunny skies, and a much calmer day weatherwise.

As predicted, the Central and Durango tennis teams were the most dominant squads as they claimed first and second place respectively.
