Lady Bruins defeat GHS

The Lady Pirates held on for a 39-30 decision in 3A WSL play.The Cedaredge Lady Bruins split a pair of 3A WSL games this past week and stand at 1-1 in league play and 2-1 overall. Cedaredge traveled to Gunnison on Tuesday (Dec. 11) where it scored a 42-33 win over the Lady Cowboys.

On Friday, Dec. 14, Olathe's Lady Pirates had just enough to hold off the surging Cedaredge Bruins in the second half for a 39-30 win.

CHS 42, Gunnison 33

Cedaredge's week began with a trip to Gunnison on Tuesday. A 13-7 first quarter gave the Lady Bruins an early lead. Each team scored six points in the second period to give Cedaredge a six-point lead at 19-13 at the break.

Gunnison was unable to stop the Bruins' offense in the second half, with Cedaredge adding two points to its lead with a 10-8 run in the third quarter.

Both offenses were fairly effective in the final period, with Cedaredge once again holding the upper hand with a 13-12 advantage and a final score of 42-33.

Sophomore Kristen Gardner was the Lady Bruins' scoring leader with 14 points while Jordan Smith contributed 10 counters for the winners.

Gunnison is 0-1 in the WSL and 0-2 overall.

Olathe 39, Bruins 30

There wasn't enough offense to get excited about in the first half of last week's contest in Olathe.

Neither team was a bundle of scoring energy in the first quarter, with the Lady Pirates outscoring Cedaredge 9-4.
Olathe (2-0 and 4-0) doubled the Bruins 10-5 in the second stanza to take a 19-9 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Both teams came out in the third quarter and scored eight points each. Cedaredge had its best quarter of the game with a 13-12 edge in the final period but could not overhaul the Lady Pirates.

There were no double-digit scorers in the game with Jordan Smith and Alyssa Isaman pacing the Lady Bruins with six points each and Bree Gutierrez next high with five counters. Haley Turley led Olathe's offense with six points while teammates Kayley Archuleta, Amanda Kinderknecht, Taylor Gibson and Ashlee Pope all chipping in five points each.

Cedaredge had three games on its schedule this week. The first contest was against Aspen in Cedaredge on Tuesday (Dec. 18). This weekend's 18th annual Delta County basketball tournament is set to begin on Friday.

The tournament began in 1994 and was called the Bank of the West Basketball Tournament. Now the tournament's name is the First Colorado National Bank Basketball Tournament.

Delta's boys won the first tournament and the Lady Bulldogs from Hotchkiss were the first champions in the girls' division.

Hotchkiss and Paonia will open this year's tournament in the girls' division on Friday with tipoff set for 3 p.m. at Delta High School.

The second girls' game of the day is set for 6:30 p.m. and will feature Cedaredge and Delta.

The consolation and championship title games will be played on Saturday at 3 and 6 p.m. respectively.
