Cedaredge boys split weekend cage battles

Cedaredge came back from an early deficit to win 56-49.With half of its league schedule left to play, Cedaredge High School boys' basketball coach, Kevin Dunbar, remains confident his Bruins will be in the hunt when the right time comes. Cedaredge hosted two 3A league foes, Roaring Fork and Olathe this past week.

The Bruins lost to league front runner Roaring Fork 55-45 on Friday and bounced back to score a 56-49 decision over Olathe on Saturday.

The first quarter of this game was fairly even with the Rams posting a 17-15 edge after eight minutes of play.
The game's turning point came in the second quarter where Roaring Fork shut down the Bruins' offense in a 15-6 run and a 32-21 halftime lead.

Reid Gates paced the Bruins in the first half with 10 points, including three field goals and four of five from the free throw line. Gates collected nine more points in the second half to finish with 19 counters to lead Cedaredge's offense. Trent Walker finished with 11 points.

Corey Reynolds had six points in a 17-14 fourth-quarter run by the Bruins. Dakotah Grett slipped 22 points through the nets to lead the Rams' offense.

Bruins 56, Pirates 49

An ugly start for the Bruins on Saturday turned out to be pretty in the end as Cedaredge overcame a 17-4 first quarter to power its way to a 56-49 3A WSL victory over the visiting Olathe Pirates.

Russell Harris had a pair of threes in the opening quarter against Cedaredge and scored eight points in the Pirate's 17-4 run.

The tide turned in second-quarter play with Cedaredge getting its offense fueled up in a 21-8 run to tie the game at 25-25 at the break. Dillon Smith provided the spark for Cedaredge with a pair of treys and two deuces for 10 points. Gates chipped in another six counters.

Cedaredge kept the pressure on in third-quarter play with Walker hitting two long-range shots to go with a free throw for seven points.

A 17-16 fourth quarter went to Cedaredge as Gates led the charge with seven points. Tanner Vernon scored eight points and Trenton Jole had six for the Pirates in the quarter.

Gates led Cedaredge with 16 points and Smith had 15. Vernon had 14 points to lead the Olathe attack.

The Bruins are in Aspen on Saturday where they are scheduled to take on the Skiers in a game set for 4 p.m.
