With just two first-place finishes at last weekend's Delta Invitational Track Meet, the Cedaredge Lady Bruins managed to put together 121 points and place second in the 13-team field. Delta won the team title with 137.5 points with Paonia placing third (75.5) and Hotchkiss fifth (59).
The Bruin boys were also highly successful on Saturday with 123 points and a second-place finish in their division. Palisade won the boys division with 140 points, Delta third (115), Hotchkiss fourth (68), and Paonia finished sixth with 38 points.
Rebecca Deal looks to be ready to challenge for a top place in the 3A WSL long jump competition. Deal jumped 15-5.5 to win Saturday's competition. Teammate Rachael Latta was less than a foot away with her jump of 14-11.5 and placed second.
Kaitlyn Kissner was the class of the field in discus after winning the event with a throw of 105-11. Her nearest competitor was almost two feet away.
The Lady Bruins picked up big points with three second-place finishes. Latta was one of those placers, with the 400 and 1600m relay teams earning eight points as well. The 400m relay team members included Summer Herman, Amber Jenkins, Latta and Deal. Their time was 53.12.
Kendal McHugh, Kenzie Henderson, Nellie Freeman and MacKenzie Kehmeier teamed up to run a 4:26.38 in the 1600m relay.
There were six third-place finishes for Cedaredge including individual placings by Micaela Shaw (discus), Herman (200m), Jordan Smith (100m hurdles), Kenzie Henderson (in both the 300m hurdles and high jump), and the 3200m relay team (Freeman, Kehmeier, McHugh and Jessica Sullivan).
Herman (100m), Ashley Diaz (1600m), Lydia Knutson (300m hurdles) and Kissner (shot put) all placed fourth on Saturday.
Fifth-place contributors for the Lady Bruins included Diaz (800m), McHugh (high jump), Latta (triple jump) and Shaw (shot put).
There were four new records for the boys at last week's Delta Invitational and two of them were set by Cedaredge's Reid Gates. Gates broke his old 2012 record of 6-5 in the high jump with a leap of 6-6. Gates also set a new mark in the long jump with a 21-6.6 effort.
Dante Markley just missed having four first-place finishes in Delta. His 100m time of 11.64 topped the field and his 24.28 in the 200m was second to none as well.
Markley's third win was in the 110m high hurdles where he recorded a time of 16.07. The 300m hurdles are usually one of the wins Markley obtains in local track meets. Delta's Chris Black edged Markley by 35 one hundreths of a second in the 300m hurdle event. Black had a 41.63 while Markley had a 41.98.
The Bruins' other top finish came from Austin Williams in the shot put. His throw of 43-6.75 was more than four feet better than his nearest competitor.
Second place finishes went to Xander Camp (100m, 11.79), Williams in the discus (140-2), and the 400m relay team (Jake Arter, Steton Brewer, Ryan Latta, Camp) which had a time of 46.84.
Shane Gates finished third in the high jump while Cedaredge's 1600m relay team (Shane Gates, Bryce Klaseen, Latta, Jacob Robb) finished fourth.
Fifth-place finishes went to Brewer in both the 110 and 300m hurdle events. The 3200m relay team (Klaseen, Latta, Joseph Marah, Garrett Peterson) had a fifth-place finish as well.
Carter Stoudt was sixth in triple jump.
Seventh-place finishers included Peterson (3200m run), Camp (long jump) and the 400m relay team (Logan Cronenbaugh, Shawn Badding, Dylan Buffum, Klaseen).
Arter picked up eighth-place points in the 200m dash.
