A big win at New Castle over the Coal Ridge Titans was overshadowed by the doubleheader loss to Basalt on Saturday.
CHS 15, Coal Ridge 3
The Bruins (3-2) pounded out 14 hits on their way to a 15-3 win over Coal Ridge (0-3).
Trent Walker was two-for-three with three RBIs in the game, with Aaron Henrie picking up two hits and two RBIs. Henrie also stole two bases in the rout. Peter Williamson was also a two-hit performer with two RBIs and a double to his credit.
James LeDonne had two stolen bases for the Bruins.
The Bruins trailed 3-1 going into the fourth inning but emerged a 13-3 leader after a monstrous 12-run rally in the top half of the inning.
Another two runs in the fifth ended the game (15-3) after Coal Ridge failed to score in the bottom of the inning.
Basalt 8, Cedaredge 6
The Bruins allowed league-leading Basalt to get a big lead with two runs in the first inning, one in the second frame, and four more in the third for a 7-1 lead.
Cedaredge never found a rhythm to the game until the sixth and seventh innings. Basalt (5-0) scored once in the top of the sixth to make the score 8-1.
The Bruins rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and struck for two more before a double-play ended the game.
Henrie continued his strong play offensively with two hits in two at bats. He also stole two more bases.
Junior Chance Hanson was one-for-one with two RBIs, including a triple.
LeDonne also blasted a triple for the Bruins in their loss to the visiting Longhorns.
Basalt 14, Bruins 8
This game did not start the way Bruins' coach CJ Cannell wanted it to. The Longhorns erupted for five first-inning runs and shut down the usually potent Bruins' offense to lead 5-0 going to the second inning.
Both teams scored once in the second.
Basalt cranked up the tempo in the third inning to score three more times for a 9-1 lead. The Bruins failed to score in their half of the inning.
Two more runs for Basalt upped the Longhorn's lead to 11-1 in the fourth inning.
The Bruins made a run at Basalt in the bottom of the fifth with six runs. That was the closest Cedaredge would come (11-7). The Longhorns scored two times in the sixth and once again in the seventh to end their scoring for the day.
Cedaredge added one run in the bottom of the seventh making the final score 14-8.
Eli Underwood had three hits and an RBI to lead Cedaredge's offense. LeDonne had two hits and two RBIs while Walker was one-for-three (a double) and two RBIs.
Cedaredge will try to regroup and get back on the winning side with a doubleheader against Olathe, who is undefeated at 2-0, this Saturday (March 30). Game times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
