Reid Gates claimed two wins and two meet records at Saturday's Frank Woodburn Invitational. Gates cleared 6 feet, 8 inches to win the high jump, and soared 21 feet, 9.25 inches to win the long jump.
A total of five men's records were broken at this year's meet, hosted by Palisade High School and held at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. The other three records were claimed by Coal Ridge High School, which won the meet with 121 points. Cedaredge scored 76.5 points to place third out of 21 teams.
Dante Markley placed in four events, including the 200 (2nd, 23.37), the 300m hurdles (2nd, 42.31), the 110m hurdles (third, 16.73), and the 100-meter dash (5th, 11.6). Markley is ranked in the top 10 in the state in each of the four events.
Austin Williams hasn't yet competed at a state track meet, but that is likely to change. On Saturday, Williams won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 2 inches for the win. The throw is also the best recorded this season in Class 3A competition.
Williams (not to be mistaken with William Austin of Paonia) also landed in the top 10 in state competition in the discus, throwing 139 feet, 7 inches to place third.
Gates also competed in the 200m, and placed fourth with a time of 23.49. Shane Gates placed fifth in the high jump, and Steton Brewer placed seventh in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300m hurdles.
