The Cedaredge Lady Bruins tennis team struck gold last week in the Delta County Invitational Tennis Tournament. It's been awhile since Cedaredge has placed in the top three at the tournament, but this year's 3 doubles team managed to not only make it to the finals, but win the title as well.
Brittany Sullivan and Cassydy Zamarripa played for the championship against the only team to defeat them this season, Glenwood Springs.
Sullivan and Zamarripa knocked off B. Gilman and H. Nilsson by the scores of 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Both Cedaredge players are sophomores and the prospect of big things to come the next two years is exciting.
The 3 doubles partners began their tennis careers as freshmen and have improved each week.
Sullivan and Zamarripa were not the only Bruins to place at this year's Delta County Tournament. Sierra McHugh started slow but recovered nicely to defeat Glenwood's Claire Wolcott 1-6, 6-1, 11-9.
Delta's Lady Panthers did not have anyone playing for a title, but there were matches for third and fifth places.
Alex Rascon and Hattie Bohling played in a one doubles match for third place but were beaten by Glenwood's E. Metzger and T. Ebert 6-2, 6-1.
Cedaredge had its 4 doubles team of Madison Eckhart and Tessa Wick playing for fifth place against Central junior varsity's A. Driscoll and L. Medrano. The Bruins won the match 6-4, 7-5.
Madison Farmer played Grand Junction High School's junior varsity player, Jessi Smith for fifth place in 3 singles action. Smith defeated Farmer 6-4, 6-1.
Sarai Zilm of Glenwood was the tournament's Most Outstanding Singles Player with Cortez's Mary Wright and Emily Walck picked as the Most Outstanding Doubles Team.
Glenwood Springs won the tourney title with 58 points and Cortez was second with 51. Cedaredge placed seventh with 27 points, Hotchkiss was ninth (20 points), Delta was 11th (15), and Paonia had 4 points (13th).
Cedaredge hosted the Cortez Panthers' tennis team on April 11 at Bill Heddles Rec Center in Delta.
The Lady Bruins won five of seven matches. Only the 3 singles and 1 doubles team failed to win their matches.
Jessica Chevalier (1S), won her match in straight sets. Sierra McHugh (2S) lost her first set 0-6 but rebounded to win the next two 6-4 and 10-6.
Bethany Smail and Abbey Burgett had to go three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-6) before winning their 2 doubles match.
Cassydy Zamarripa and Brittany Sullivan won their 3D match 6-1, 6-4, and, Madison Eckhart and Tessa Wick went three sets to win the 4 doubles match 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.blog comments powered by Disqus
