The Cedaredge Bruins track teams enjoyed the past week's weather while participating in the Montrose Invitational. The boys' team, behind first-place performances from Reid Gates, scored 63 points and placed fourth.
Eagle Valley won the boys' division with 130 points, with Coal Ridge coming in second (114), and Glenwood Springs was third (68).
Cedaredge's Lady Bruins scored 52 points and placed seventh. Eagle Valley won the team competition with 90 points.
Reid posted 20 points on individual wins for the Bruins last Saturday in Montrose. Gates won the long jump with a leap of 21-4.5 and cleared 6-4 for the title in high jump. Neither of those marks represent Gates' top performance. Gates has a 21-9.5 in the long jump and has cleared 6-8 in the high jump a couple of times this season.
Austin Williams had a second and a third in his specialities, the shot and discus. Williams was second in the discus with a throw of 138-3 and heaved the shot 45-10.75 to place third in that competition. Williams has a best throw of 51-2 in the shot and has sailed the discus 143-0 in earlier meets.
Third-place finishes went to Dante Markley in the 110m high hurdles (15.54, and a third-place rank in 3A) and Shane Gates in the high jump (6-0).
The Bruins' 400m relay team posted its season-best time of 44.55 to take fourth in that race and Markley was fifth in the 200m dash in a time of 22.93. He has a 22.7 that came in Gunnison. Markley is ranked ninth in 2A in the 100m and is eighth in the 200m.
A sixth-place went to Ryan Latta in the 400m dash after he ran his season-best time of 53.31. The Cedaredge 1600m relay team placed seventh and the 800m sprint medley was eighth.
Several underclassmen have been stepping up lately and the Lady Bruins have been scoring enough points to stay in the top eight for team standings this season.
Some of the notable contributors to this year's Lady Bruin success include Kendall McHugh (FR), Mackenzie Keh-meier (SO), Nellie Freeman (FR), and Kenzie Henderson (FR).
Senior Rachael Latta gave the Lady Bruins their lone first-place win with a 16-2.75 in the long jump. To date, that is her best effort of the season.
There were three third-place finishes for Cedaredge's girls. Kehmeier ran a season-best 26.88 in the 200m, the Lady Bruins 800m relay team (Kehmeier, Freeman, Latta and Rebecca Deal) ran a 1:49.23 for their best time of the season, and Henderson tied with two other competitors in high jump after clearing 5-0.
Ashley Diaz was fourth in the 1600m run and Cedaredge's 800m sprint medley team (Amber Jenkins, Summer Herman, Henderson and Deal) were fourth with a time of 2:29.53.
A couple of fifth places went to Freeman in the 800m and McHugh in the 100m.
Herman and Diaz placed seventh in the 100m and Diaz in the 800m respectively.
Henderson ran a tough race to finish eighth in the 300m hurdles.
The Bruins will host the Bruin Invitational this Friday, May 3, with the starting time roughly around noon.blog comments powered by Disqus
