Cedaredge's Lady Bruins improved to 13-6 and 6-2 in 3A WSL softball with their second straight 8-6 win over Gunnison. Cedaredge won by the same score on Sept. 19 in Cedaredge.
Both teams had nine hits and Cedaredge committed six errors. Tuesday's game saw the Lady Bruins accumulate 15 hits with just three errors in the game.
Cedaredge picked up a non-conference win over Cortez's Lady Panthers on Thursday. The final score in that contest was 13-7.
Bruins 8, GHS 6
An early-game scoring run had Cedaredge up 3-1 after two innings. The third inning produced one more run for the Lady Bruins and a 4-1 lead. Gunnison's bottom half of the inning was almost game-changing as the Lady Cowboys rallied for three runs to tie the game at 4-4.
Cedaredge was held scoreless the next two innings while Gunnison took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
A four-run sixth inning was the deciding factor in the game as neither team scored in the seventh to make the final score 8-6.
Cedaredge coach Matt Hall recognized Marissa Cantrell as The Player of the Game for her outstanding play. "She pitched a great game giving up five earned runs with two strike outs and only one walk. Offensively, she went four for five with two critical RBIs."
Heather Wilczek (Jr) has been on a roll the past few games, and she came through with three hits, two RBIs and a double for Cedaredge.
Katie O'Hern also had three hits that produced two RBIs. Kristen Alward had a two-hit day that included a double.
Bruins 13, MCHS 7
As with its previous game with Gunnison, Cedaredge jumped on the Lady Panthers for a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the second inning.
Cortez scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second and then added two more in the bottom of the third tying the game at 3-3.
The Lady Bruins went on a hitting spree to score four runs in the fourth and another three in the fifth and sixth innings to win going away. Cortez rallied for two runs in the fifth and seventh innings to account for its seven runs.
Shelby Rogers was three-for-four with two RBIs to lead Cedaredge's offense. Jazmine Gomez and Wilczek had two hits in the game for Cedaredge and an RBI apiece.
Gomez, Wilczek and Alward all had doubles in the game for the winners.
Cantrell picked up her 11th win of the season against six losses.
Cedaredge finished the regular season at 13-6 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Lady Bruins finished second behind Basalt (14-4, 8-0).
Cedaredge is ninth among the top 34 teams in Class 3A softball standings. In the list of predicted playoff races, the Lady Bruins finished in the number 15 spot.
News from head coach Matt Hall has the Lady Bruins playing in Broomfield at Holy Family High School. Host Holy Family (number three in state) (16-2) and number 23 Grand Valley (13-6) play at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6 to open the four-team Region 1 playoffs. On the opposite side of the bracket is number 15 Cedaredge taking on number 10 Rocky Ford (6-3) at 12:15 p.m.
