For Cedaredge High School's head wrestling coach Ted Schanen, there is more than a passing notion that this year's Bruins team may be something special.
Schanen returns 11 letter winners from a year ago and five of them were state qualifiers.
Six of those letter winners are from the senior class, with three having had state experience from a year ago.
Schanen's assistant coaches include Martin Alejandre, Chad Anderson, Joey Kallsen and Brian O'Hern.
There's not much singling out any one wrestler from any class by Schanen when it comes to naming top performers. "We are led this year by a very strong senior class. Last year, we had no seniors, and some key underclassmen were injured. I have high expectations for this season. We have all the tools necessary to be very successful and surprise a lot of people. Each grade has top performers that will really contribute to this team. Our young guys know how to work hard and what to expect, and they are learning how to fight."
As for this year's competition, "I think, based on our performance last year, the summer we had, and the way things are starting off this year, we should be one of the favorites to win league and regionals. I am very excited by the first few weeks, now we just need to show that we can compete with the best."
The list of seasoned seniors includes Alejandro Alejandre (letterman and state qualifier last year), Brian Leahy (letterman and state qualifier last year), Peter Williamson (letterman and state qualifier last year), Mickey Madaleno (letterman last year), Beau Hebert (letterman last year), Ty Morton (letterman last year) and Dustan Hejny.
This year's juniors include Isaiah Surber (letterman last year), Garrett Humble (letterman last year), Wyatt Toothaker (letterman last year), Heath Frost (letterman last year) and Wyatt Ashby.
Jake Ostrom and Austin Todd lead a big contingent of sophomores into the 2013-14 season. Both lettered a year ago and both were participants at the state level as freshmen.
Landon Eckhart was also a letter winner as a freshman.
The remaining sophomore list includes Juan Perez-Garcia, Mario Madaleno, Skylar Kuhn, Wyatt Hamilton and Colten Coe.
This year's freshman class participants include Blake Nation, Brandon O'Hern, Tre' LaBossiere, Zach Anderson, Colter Wagner, Tory Wilson and Dakota Nequette.
Cedaredge opens the season with competition at the Maverick Duals on the campus of CMU. The Bruins will compete in five matches that day.blog comments powered by Disqus
