The Cedaredge High School boys' basketball team found last week's matchups to be successful for its opponents. On Tuesday (Jan. 28) the Bruins lost 58-48 to the Gunnison Cowboys.
A Saturday contest with league-leading Aspen was also a loss, 70-46.
Cowboys 58, Bruins 48
The last time these two teams met on Dec. 10, the Bruins emerged as victors by a 57-40 decision. Last Tuesday, Gunnison evened the season series with a 58-48 win in Gunnison.
Cedaredge (4-7, 6-8) enjoyed a 10-6 advantage after the first eight minutes of play. Trent Walker hit a pair of three-pointers to lead the Bruins.
Second-quarter action was Gunnison's with a 14-10 run that tied the contest at 20 heading to halftime.
Corey Reynolds had six of Cedaredge's nine points in the third quarter while Gunnison took the lead with a 15-point period paced by Les Ferraro's six points and Brevin Book's five.
A 23-point fourth quarter by the Cowboys spelled defeat for Cedaredge as the Bruins had a good offensive quarter as well but had 19 counters to fall short. The Cowboys shot 19 free throws in the period and made 10. Dylan Miller had eight points in the quarter for Gunnison.
The loss of junior Tylor Beach hindered Cedaredge's efforts down the stretch. Beach broke a foot after landing on an opponent's foot and is sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Cedaredge had three players in double-figure scoring for the Bruins. Walker led the way with 12 points while Beach finished with 11 and Corey Reynolds had 10. T.J. Curry scored 13 points to lead Gunnison.
Skiers 70, Bruins 46
The two teams started evenly in the early going, but by the end of the period Aspen was gaining momentum as it pulled away for a 13-9 lead.
The Skiers (9-0, 10-2) kicked their offense into a higher gear in the second quarter and pulled away with a 22-9 surge for a 35-18 halftime lead.
Evan Patzoldt scored eight points for Aspen in the second quarter and had 13 of its 35 points at the break.
After intermission, Cedaredge found some rhythm to its offense and produced 15 points behind the six-point effort from Walker. Dillon Smith was close behind with four points. Aspen got nine points from Trent Lichtenwalter as the Skiers scored 16 points in the third frame.
Clayton Crawford had six points for Aspen and Lichtenwalter another five as the Skiers outscored Cedaredge 19-13 in the fourth quarter for the 70-46 win. Walker scored eight of the 13 Bruin points in the fourth quarter and finished with 17 points to lead the Bruins' offense. Reynolds had 11 for Cedaredge.
Lichtenwalter scored 23 points for Aspen and was the game's leading scorer. Crawford had 18 points and Patzoldt finished with 16 for the winners.
Cedaredge plays twice this week beginning with Basalt on Friday (Feb. 7) at 7:30 p.m. A Saturday contest with Coal Ridge's Titans is in New Castle with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
