Even though Delta's Lady Panthers had a successful week of basketball, they could not improve on their final league standing of fifth place. Delta defeated Battle Mountain 51-23 at home on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and belted Summit, 56-41 on Friday.
The week's last game was with Palisade which resulted in a 48-37 loss. Delta's 7-7 (4A WSL) and 9-11 overall record has them resting in fifth place behind Glenwood Springs (14-0 and 19-1), Palisade (10-4 and 13-7), Rifle (9-5 and 9-9) and Eagle Valley (8-6 and 12-8).
The playoffs begin this week with district tournaments around the state. Delta will be part of the 4A WSL tournament held at CMU and Palisade High School. The tournament runs from Thursday through Saturday.
Delta 51, BM 23
The visiting Lady Huskies were able to keep the game close in the first quarter. A second-quarter run by Delta gave the Lady Panthers a 22-11 halftime lead with Shelby Curtis scoring 10 points.
Second half play produced new scoring leaders for the Lady Panthers, with Brittanny Brasfield and Lily Lockhart collecting seven points each. Delta outscored Battle Mountain 29-12, making the final score 51-23.
Curtis' 10 first-half points were game-high, with Brasfield next high with nine.
Delta 56, Summit 41
The final score in this game wasn't nearly as close as the score indicated. Delta pushed its lead to more than 25 points at times and held a 37-14 halftime lead.
A 23-point push in the second period was the dagger that did the most damage for Delta. Lockhart scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the frame, with Curtis adding six.
Summit began putting together scoring spurts against the Lady Panthers' bench in the second half and outscored Delta 27-19 to make the final score just a 15-point difference.
Curtis had 11 points in the game and joined Lockhart as the Panthers' double-digit scorers.Autumn Ward finished with 10 points to lead the Lady Tigers.
Palisade 48, Delta 37
Saturday's afternoon game against Palisade seemed like a quick turn-around for many of the junior varsity players as they arrived home well after midnight following their trip to Frisco the night before. Compounding the late night were the snow and traffic accidents on Vail Pass that kept motorists in long lines for nearly an hour as accidents were cleared from the roads.
Delta won the junior varsity game in overtime to avenge an earlier loss in Palisade.
Each team scored 10 points in the first quarter with the Lady Bulldogs outscoring Delta by 10 points in the second frame for a 24-14 halftime lead.
Aspen Guruy was a one-person wrecking crew in the game as the tough Palisade post-player dominated inside play for 22 points.
Delta played better in the second half but could not overcome the Bulldog's big second quarter. Palisade managed to stay ahead with a 24-23 second-half to preserve the victory.
Cruz Maestas hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for the Bulldogs. Brasfield's eight points were the most scored by a Lady Panther in the contest.blog comments powered by Disqus
