The Lady Panthers won two of the three volleyball matches played this past week. Two of the matches were contests within the 4A WSL.
A non-conference tilt with Grand Valley on Thursday was a 3-0 win. Delta lost to Glenwood Springs, 3-2, on Tuesday (Oct. 2) and then won a convincing 3-1 decision on the road against Eagle Valley on Saturday.
GS 3, Delta 2
Those who attended the volleyball match between Delta and Glenwood Springs were treated to a superb match. Glenwood (6-1 and 9-4) leads the 4A WSL with Palisade (6-1 and 9-5) holding second. Delta (4-3 and 9-7) is listed in third place.
The first four sets of this contest were decided by just two points. Glenwood won the opening set 27-25 and Delta regrouped to take the second set 25-23. No more than three points separated these two teams in the first two sets.
The Lady Panthers had a six-point lead (12-6) in the third set and managed to stay in front for a 25-23 win to go up 2-1 in match play.
Glenwood Springs had their biggest lead in the fourth set at 16-13 and 24-21 with a number of ties down the stretch. The Lady Demons managed to hold off the upset-minded Panthers for a 25-23 decision.
In the fifth set, Delta had as much as a three-point lead twice only to stall out at 11-10 and eventually fall 15-11.
Skylyn Webb had 13 kills in the match with Erin Zunich next with 12 and Callie Gafford with eight. Brooke Taylor chipped in five kills.
Natalie Larkin had 41 digs and Zunich 30 for the Panthers. Toni Ortiz dished out 16 assists in the match with Webb doling out 11.
Even though it was a loss for Delta, head coach Renee Cronenberg praised her team for playing strong and well.
Delta 3, GV 0
Delta dominated this contest with strong play and determination. A lack of concentration at times kept the score closer than it should have been.
The Lady Panthers led by 11 at one time but allowed Grand Valley to creep back in to win by a score of 25-20.
Set two was a 25-15 win for Delta with Gafford scoring on three kill shots and Webb on two.
The final set went to Delta, 25-12. This set was close with the score tied at 3-3. After that, Delta jumped out to a 9-3 lead and went on to win going away.
Gafford finished with 10 kills with Taylor and Zunich contributing four each.
Delta 3, EV 1
Delta won the last time these two teams met (3-0). The first set of their most recent meeting was closely contested with Delta scoring a 25-23 win.
The Lady Devils rebounded for a second-set win with a score of 25-19.
Delta closed out the match with two straight set wins, 25-16 and 25-14.
Lacy Gerard had eight kills and 11 digs for Eagle Valley with Megan Asmussen recording 18 assists.
There were no stats available for the Panthers.
Delta takes on Central on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. and hosts Montrose on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Two 4A WSL opponents are scheduled for Saturday (Oct. 13) with Steamboat Springs and Tuesday (Oct. 16) against Palisade.
The Panthers want to win both of these matches and hope other teams will sneak a win in against the two top-seated teams.
