Delta started with a 5-0 deficit but rallied for a 74-42 blowout win in front of a large hometown crowd.After going 0-3 to start the 2012-13 basketball campaign, Delta's Lady Panthers got a great start to their 4A WSL race with a 74-42 win over the visiting Eagle Valley Devils on Thursday, Dec. 20.
Eagle Valley put a bit of a scare into the slow-starting Delta squad with a 5-0 start in the first period.
Lauren Thorpe hit four field goals and a freethrow to pace the Lady Devils in a 17-13 Delta lead after eight minutes of play. Skylyn Webb posted six points for the Lady Panthers and Shelby Curtis had four to lead Delta's offense.
Eagle Valley stayed close in the second quarter with Megan Asmussen scoring six points to help keep the Lady Devils close. Webb hit a three and was five of six at the freethrow line to pace Delta's offense in a 20-14 advantage that meant a 37-27 halftime lead for Delta.
The second half was all Delta as the Lady Panthers came out shooting in the third quarter and built a 58-34 lead going to the final stanza. Callie Gafford had a great third quarter as the tough senior hammered home five field goals and a freethrow to score 11 of Delta's 21 points in the period. The Lady Devils were held to just seven counters in the same time span.
Delta doubled Eagle Valley's point production in the final quarter (16-8) to win going away, 74-42.
Webb finished the game with 22 points to lead all scorers in the game while Gafford collected 21 markers for the winners. Brooke Taylor and Shelby Curtis chipped in eight points each and Patti Chapman had seven.
Delta was entered in the annual First Colorado National Bank tournament on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, due to an early print deadline the results of games played in the two-day tournament were not available for today's paper. The results from these games will appear in the next issue of The Delta County Independent.
