Upper weight domination seals mat win for Delta

c06 dhswr1Olathe coach Tee Jay Rose said he was estimating how many times seniors Jacob Solseth and Shane Anderson had wrestled over the years. Rose said the subject came up at weigh-ins Thursday night before the Pirates' dual against Delta, and "it must be the 50th match between them.

But in what could be the last match in a rivalry that started back at pee-wee level, Olathe's Solseth controlled Anderson for much of the match for an 8-2 win.

Since they wrestle in different classes — Solseth in 3A and Anderson in 4A — it's possible this was the last time they'll meet, said Delta coach Clayton Curtis. Their schedules don't match up.

The loss was one of six for Delta. The Panthers had five pins and won two matches by default to win the dual, 51-24.

One of the Pirate defaults was Austin Shank, who is recovering from a bruise on his collar bone and elected to sit the dual out.

"We were looking forward to wrestling him," said Curtis. His 113-pounder, sophomore David Brown, could have used the experience against Shank, a senior who is ranked second in state.

Olathe was also open at 106 pounds.

Three of Olathe's wins were in the lower weights. At 120, No. 1-ranked junior Trenton Piatt pinned Hayes McCracken in 1 minute, 50 seconds.

Tylon Cordova suffered a second-round pin against senior Pirate Ben Pridy. And freshman Kodie Komives lost by technical fall to senior Troy Rose at 138.

"He actually didn't do too bad," said Curtis of Komives' performance against the senior Pirate. "Kodie didn't give up."

At 145, Derek Horn went three rounds against Pirate Tayson Harris, losing in a 14-5 decision, and the match between juniors Hunter Brasfield and Tristen Jones at 150 ended in a hard-earned second-round pin for Olathe's Jones.

The dual opened at 160, with Cordell Stroud pinning Chayden Harris in 1:17. Kory Mills made short work of Riley Hutton with a 47-second pin. At 182, Kyle Collins pinned Pirate Jacob Hemstrom in the second round. And Marcus Garcia put Tommy Brew away in 1:12. At 220, Lino Ortiz defeated Felix Pena in an 8-2 decision.

Pirate freshman 195 Cody Frantz almost made it through the third round, losing by pin on a takedown to Alejandro Medina in 5:29.

Once the two open weights were factored in, a win was out of reach for Olathe. The Pirates won the final six matches.

With three Olathe freshmen, there was a lot of inexperience in Olathe's upper weights for the Olathe team, said Rose.

The Panthers will likely see some adjustments in their line-up after the new year, said Curtis. They have time to work on that before the Rifle dual on Jan. 10.
