Delta's baseball season took a sharp turn last week when the Panthers lost a pair of contests to rivals Palisade and Montrose. The Panthers had won their first three games of the season a week earlier but found a sack full of silent bats against the Bulldogs on Tuesday (March 19) and then again on Thursday against the Indians.
Delta lost to Palisade 13-2 and took a drubbing at the hands of Montrose in a 16-1 loss. Both games were played at Delta High School.
Palisade 13, Delta 2
A 12-hit barrage lifted the visiting Bulldogs past Delta on Tuesday.
The Panthers fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning but found the sack of bats for two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a brief 2-1 lead. Delta started the inning with a strikeout and then got a single from Austin Kimber and a double from Lino Ortiz. Palisade helped the Panthers move around the bases with a hit batsman, a walk, and three balks.
The Bulldogs collected two runs in the top of the third and were on their way after that. Four runs in the fourth and another six in the fifth more than provided a comfortable margin for Palisade.
Play was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule with the Bulldogs capturing a 13-2 WSL decision.
Jeremiah Baier joined Ortiz and Kimber with a hit.
Palisade's Caden Woods had four RBIs on a three-for-four day at the plate, including a double.
Tass Crow took the win for Palisade while Isaiah Kathrein was saddled with the loss for Delta.
Montrose 16, Delta 1
Someone forgot to load the bats for Thursday's game with Montrose. Or, maybe the Indians found them and used them against the Panthers in a 17-hit onslaught that yielded 16 runs.
Montrose made it clear it knew how to use its bats from the start with a four-run first inning that included six hits.
A two-hit second frame produced two more runs to give the Indians a 6-0 lead after two innings of play.
Jake Kastendieck led off the third with a double and the track meet for Montrose baserunners began. Seven hits later, the Indians had plated seven runs to take an imposing 13-0 lead.
Jake Bradburn blasted a two-run shot to left center field in the fourth, making the score 15-0.
Baier led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and later scored on fielder's choice off the bat of Devin Williams.
Kyle Freeburg scored Montrose's final run in the top of the fifth after reaching base with a double. Kam DeVincentis followed Freeburg with a double of his own to make the final score 16-1.
Bradburn and Kastendieck had three hits apiece for the Indians with three other players enjoying a two-hit day. Delta's offense was led by junior Keaton Reiher who had two hits in three at bats.
Palisade is leading the 4A WSL with a 3-0 record and is 4-1 overall. The Panthers fall to 3-2 overall and are 0-1 in league play.
