Delta High School Panthers' baseball team played three times last week and emerged winners in all three. The Panthers played Olathe on March 27 in Olathe and came away with a 12-7 decision.
A Saturday double-header with visiting Battle Mountain turned into a sweep with Delta winning the first game 11-1 and the second by a 17-2 score.
Delta 12, Olathe 7
Keaton Reiher was a one-man wrecking crew for Delta as he had three hits in four at bats and three RBIs. Two of Reiher's hits were doubles, with a triple coming in his third plate appearance.
Ryan Whiteside also had a good day at the plate with three hits, including a double. Derek Horn joined the double-parade in the fifth inning.
Jacob Leary came off the bench to hit a triple in the sixth inning for Delta.
The Panthers traded runs in the first inning with each team scoring twice. Delta took the lead for good in the second inning with three runs.
Olathe was unable to stop Delta's offense as the Panthers scored twice in the fourth and added four runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 12-3 lead to the bottom of the sixth.
The Pirates scored once in the bottom of the sixth and rallied for three more in the seventh to make the final score 12-7.
Bryan Leu paced Olathe's offense with three hits and an RBI with Calvin Corey collecting two hits and two RBIs. Mario Hightower also had two hits and an RBI.
Tyler Sandoval picked up the win for Delta while Trenton Jole suffered the loss. Sandoval is 2-0 on the season.
Delta 11, BM 1
The Panthers started strong against Battle Mountain in game one. Three runs got the Panthers started in the bottom of the first inning. Neither team scored in the second frame.
Delta extended its lead to 7-0 with four runs in the third inning on two hits, three walks, and a hit batter. Jeremiah Baier started the inning with a double and came in on Horn's single later in the inning.
Delta scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings while giving up a single run in the top of the fifth to make the final score 11-1.
Horn's three hits resulted in four RBIs and Baier had two hits, including a double.
Isaiah Kathrein was the winning pitcher.
Delta 17, BM 2
The Huskies might have thought they were watching a re-run in game two when Delta began its scoring spree in the first inning. The only thing different about the show was the Panthers did not stop at three runs. Instead, Delta finished the inning with seven runs on six hits, a walk, and several errors.
Sandoval got things started with a two-run double. Lino Ortiz and Kathrein followed with RBI singles with a passed ball following that. Whiteside's two-run single highlighted the opening inning for Delta.
It was downhill after that with the Panthers tacking on four more runs in the second and another six in the fourth to account for their 17 runs. Battle Mountain's two runs came in the third inning.
Whiteside had four RBIs in his two-for-two day at the plate for Delta. Horn, Ortiz, and Marcus Garcia finished the game with two hits apiece. Christian Pellerito and Joe Lybarger had two hits each for Battle Mountain in the loss.
Reiher was the winning pitcher for Delta and Daniel Caballero13 took the loss for Battle Mountain.
Delta faced Rifle on Tuesday, April 2, and doesn't play again until April 9 (Tuesday) against Steamboat Springs in double-header action beginning at 3 p.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
