Delta High School's varsity baseball team traveled to Rifle on Tuesday, April 2, to face the Bears in a key 4A WSL contest. The Panthers managed to fight off the Bears for a 7-3 win.
A two-run first inning gave Delta an early lead. Rifle (1-1, 3-1) scored its first run in the second inning but trailed 2-1 until the fifth. Delta added one more run in the top half of the inning and then gave up a pair of runs to the Bears, making the score 3-3 heading into the sixth inning.
The Panthers regained the lead in the top of the sixth and never looked back. Isaiah Kathrein drove in the go-ahead run for Delta with a double to left field. Derek Horn started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a stolen base. Austin Kimber reached base on a dropped third strike that allowed Horn to make it to third. The hit by Kathrein scored both runners after Kimber had stolen second, putting runners on second and third.
Keaton Reiher's batting average got a lift with his four-for-four plate performance against the Bears. Reiher had three singles and a double to raise his season average to .607, which leads the Panthers stats for players with 15 or more at bats. Reiher has 17 hits in 28 at bats (34 plate appearances) for an on base percentage of .676 and a slugging percentage of .929.
Tyler Sandoval got the win for Delta and is now 3-0 on the season. He gave up six hits allowing three runs and struck out nine batters.
Delta (3-1, 7-2) added an additional two runs in the seventh inning and then put the clamps on defensively to keep the score 7-3.
