Last week's regular-season baseball finale in Gypsum was a victory for the Panthers as they rolled past Eagle Valley 12-1. The win left Delta with a league record of 12-2 and an overall mark of 16-3.
Palisade finished at 14-0 and 17-2.
Against Eagle Valley (7-7, 8-11), Delta got off to an early lead at 2-0 in the first inning, and built that lead to 7-0 after batting in the top of the third.
Eagle Valley put its lone run on the board in the bottom of the third and the Panthers added five more runs in the top of the fifth, ending the game by the 10-run rule.
Delta's Tyler Sandoval cranked a first-inning home run with Derek Horn on to give the Panthers their 2-0 lead.
There were five hits and a walk in the third inning that contributed to Delta's five runs being scored in that inning. Marcus Garcia had a double to highlight the inning.
In the fifth, Delta got two hits, a hit batter, and five errors that helped get five runs across the plate.
Garcia finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers while Austin Kimber drove in three runs. Sandoval scored three times in the game and had two RBIs with his first-inning home run.
Isaiah Kathrein scattered three hits in his five innings of work. Kathrein finished at 3-2 on the mound in regular-season play.
Delta was ranked in the top eight in power rankings for 4A teams and was awarded a home-field regional playoff game to begin state playoffs. Information from that playoff round is found in another story in today's paper.
Delta headed into regional play with a fifth-place ranking in Class 4A baseball standings and seventh in power points. Fort Morgan was first at 19-0, D'Evelyn second at 18-1, Montrose third (17-2) and Palisade fourth at 17-2. Rifle was 11th with its 13-6 record.
