Beth Nelson served as Central High School's volleyball coach for 12 years. Now she is at Delta High School and will begin molding a new era with the Lady Panthers.
Nelson will be assisted, in the 2013 season, by Teresa Baier and Bria Lovato (DHS grad and athlete).
This year's Lady Panther squad will feature 32 athletes on three teams.
Starting anew is most always an anxious time for coaches. Delta will have a few returning athletes from last season's squad to help smooth over the rough spots as Nelson sorts things out and sets a course for a new beginning.
The Lady Panthers will have a nucleus of senior returnees to guide the way for the 2013 team. Brittanny Brasfield will anchor the squad as a middle blocker while Shelby Curtis and Bailee Massano will provide offense as outside hitters. Katie Puderbaugh will serve as libero for this year's Lady Panthers.
Other players on the varsity roster who should see lots of action this season include senior Stephanie Sidor, Toni Ortiz (senior setter), Haley Millard (junior middle blocker), Taylor Jensen (junior right side) and Desiree Smith (junior setter).
Delta's junior varsity roster includes Katie Ames (junior middle blocker), Emily Baier (freshman setter), Amelia Hawkins (sophomore middle blocker), Shanan Davey (sophomore outside hitter), Joyclie Webb (freshman outside hitter), Shelbi Ledesma (freshman DS and outside hitter), Alexis Williams (sophomore right side and outside hitter), Makayla Mills (freshman outside hitter) and Emily Nortnik (freshman setter).
Teams that Nelson sees as top threats include Palisade and Glenwood Springs. "These are tough league matches that we need to take care of," notes Nelson.
Delta's new coach is optimistic and has a positive outlook for the coming season. When asked about how her team will do, Nelson had this response. "Good ... we are making a run for the league title this season."
Delta was one of 13 teams to participate in last weekend's volleyball scrimmages in Montrose. The four games played will give the Lady Panthers a measuring point of how to better prepare themselves for the rugged season ahead.
Delta is at Gunnison for tournament play this Saturday and will face Paonia on Sept. 3 in Paonia.
Matches for C-team through varsity action are set for 4, 5 and 6 p.m.blog comments powered by Disqus
