Delta's Panthers got off to a rousing start in the 2013 football campaign with a dominating 39-7 victory over the visiting Gunnison Cowboys last Friday night.
Junior Cade Gafford was good on 14 of 21 passes and 231 yards for four touchdowns as the Panthers clawed their way to a 32-0 halftime lead at Panther Stadium.
Senior Ryan Whiteside was on the receiving end of 10 of those aerials for 162 yards and three touchdowns (longest reception was 51 yards). Devin Williams (SR) caught two passes for 40 yards with Tyler Sandoval (SR) and sophomore Kory Mills hauling in one pass each for 20 and nine yards respectively.
In the rushing department, junior Derek Horn toted the pigskin 11 times for 84 yards to lead Delta's ground game. Senior Taylor Brown gathered 36 yards on three carries with Jonney Ponce (SO) picking up 33 yards on five carries and Sandoval collecting 29 yards on seven carries and a pair of touchdowns.
Delta finished the game with 426 yards of total offense.
Defensively, senior Cordell Stroud anchored the defense with 12 tackles in the game. Seniors Jasiel Garcia and Sandoval had six and five tackles respectively.
Junior Eian Baier picked off one Gunnison pass and had a pair of deflections.
The Panthers will travel to Montrose this Friday to take on the highly touted Indians in a 7 p.m. contest. Montrose ran over Palmer Ridge by the score of 48-7 last week.blog comments powered by Disqus
