A sacrifice fly from Bry Music in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in Delta High School's prep softball game in Rifle on Aug. 29.
Delta took the early lead, 1-0, and added six more runs in the third to take a 7-1 lead to the fourth inning.
Neither team scored in the fourth and Rifle made a serious run at the Lady Panthers with a three-run surge in the fifth to make it 7-4 in favor of Delta.
Music's sac-fly in the sixth gave Delta an 8-4 lead as the game entered the seventh inning. The Lady Bears got serious again in the bottom of the seventh and plated three runs to come up one short in the 8-7 Delta win.
Delta's top hitters included winning pitcher Lily Lockhart. A first-inning home run to center field was one of her two hits and two RBIs in the game. Music also had two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Panthers while Kasha Culver and Nicole Money recorded two hits each in the game for Delta. Raven Duran's lone hit in the game was an RBI double.
Lockhart went seven innings to pick up the win and struck out seven Lady Bears along the way.
Even though Delta had three errors in the game, coach Steve Reiher was pleased with his team's play. "We swung it pretty well and were pretty solid defensively," noted Reiher.
Reiher complimented Lockhart for her performance as a freshman. "Lily pitched well for us. She competed in some real tough situations and made some clutch pitches in crucial points of the game."
Kasha Culver also drew praise from Reiher for some great defensive plays.
The win leaves Delta with a record of 3-1 overall. Rifle fell to 0-3.
