A 7-11 overall record and a 1-4 league mark are just memories that have been replaced in 2013. This year's Lady Panthers' softball team has earned a 14-3 and 5-0 record with a pair of games left to play.
The win over Palisade was the second of the season and leaves the Lady Panthers atop the 4A WSL standings. Rifle is second with Palisade third and Eagle Valley fourth.
Delta's entrance into post-season play is certain. The exact details are not clear at this time. Even if the Panthers lose their remaining two games, Eagle Valley on Oct. 1 and Montrose on Oct. 3, Delta will be this year's league champions.
Delta faced Cedaredge earlier in the week (see related story elsewhere in today's paper) and scored a 14-6 win.
Delta 11, Palisade 3
Lily Lockhart pitched and hit well against the Lady Bulldogs in Palisade. She was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed. A two-for-two day at the plate produced a double and triple and she scored once.
Delta's top hitter was Kasha Culver who had three hits in five at bats and two RBIs. Culver also scored two runs. Five other Lady Panthers had two hits in the game, including Ashley Ortega who had two triples and two RBIs.
Delta scored first with two runs in the opening frame.
The game was scoreless for the next three innings. Both teams scored three runs in the fifth inning keeping Delta ahead 5-3.
Delta was able to put the game away with three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings while its defense held the Bulldogs scoreless.
Delta finished the game with 11 runs on 17 hits and two errors.
The Lady Panthers currently have a .410 team batting average. Five players have .400 or better batting averages for Delta with two more with .350-plus averages.
Bryanna Music is the team's top hitter with a .586 average. Sandoval is second with a .564.
