Delta's soccer team has won, or tied, its last 13 matches in a row. Its latest victim was visiting Moffat County. Three different players scored goals to give the Panthers a 3-1 victory at home.
Abraham Ontiveros scored the first Panther goal after Moffat County had posted the match's first score at the 24:34 mark of the first half. Ontiveros' goal came at the 7:33 mark with an assist from Cruz Archuleta.
Nearly six minutes later, Ramiro Fausto scored Delta's second goal on another assist from Archuleta to make the halftime score 2-1.
A defensive game took the match to the 18:00 mark before the final score came from Kai Maulhardt with an assist coming from Alex Quintero.
Delta, which basically finished unattached in Class 4A standings, finished with an outstanding 12-2-1 record but was relegated to a number 19 seed in this week's 2013 4A boys' soccer championships. The Panthers won't have to go far for their first-round match-up. Delta drew number 14 Montrose (9-4-2) for a match to be played in Montrose at a time yet to be determined. The match is set for Oct. 23 (today, Wednesday).
The Panthers own the only loss to WSL leader Battle Mountain (13-2), which enters the playoffs seeded eighth. The Huskies are on the opposite side of the bracket and will take on number 25 Durango (9-5-1) in Edwards.
Should Delta win its first-round battle, it would face the winner of number three Cheyenne Mountain (12-3) or number 30 Pueblo South (10-5).
A Battle Mountain win sends the Huskies to the second round on Oct. 29 against either number nine Niwot (10-3-1) or number 24 D'Evelyn (7-8).blog comments powered by Disqus
