Last week's 50-12 win over the visiting Steamboat Springs Sailors gave Delta a 7-3 overall mark in 3A football standings and 6-2 in the 3A WSL.
The Panthers went from first to fourth a week ago in a loss to Rifle.
Glenwood Springs owns a victory over Delta earlier in the season and moved ahead of the Panthers to take third place. Delta finished league play in fourth but should have a great shot at postseason play with its 7-3 overall record.
Delta was listed in the 14th position in Class 3A rankings, with the top 16 making the playoffs. In the playoff predictions, the Panthers are listed 12th.
Last Friday, against the Sailors, Delta gave up a first-quarter touchdown to trail 6-0 midway through the period.
With 3.8 seconds left in the opening quarter, Tyler Sandoval put Delta on the board with a 1-yard plunge. Kole Roberts gave the Panthers their first lead, 7-6, with his PAT kick.
After that, the floodgates opened and Delta went on a 29-0 run to take a 36-6 halftime lead.
Ryan Whiteside scored Delta's first touchdown in the second quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cade Gafford. With the PAT kick, the score became 14-6 with 7:33 left in the first half.
Sandoval scored his second TD on a 3-yard run following a Derek Horn interception. The kick failed, leaving Delta ahead 20-6 with 6:38 to play in the second quarter.
Delta's next possession resulted in another Whiteside touchdown on a 39-yard bomb from Gafford. With the kick, Delta held a 27-6 lead with 5:05 left in the opening half.
A high snap on a fourth-down play sent the ball into the end zone for a safety and two points for the Panthers. Steamboat Springs kicked off to the Panthers trailing 29-6 with 1:31 left in the opening half.
Delta took advantage of the miscue by the Sailors and punched the ball into the end zone on a Gafford to Whiteside pass that covered 45 yards. The PAT made it 36-6 at the break.
Jonney Ponce found his way into the end zone from 34 yards out for his first score of the game with 9:54 left in the third quarter. The extra-point kick was good, making the score 43-6.
Delta put the game clock into a continuous running mode for the remainder of the game with its next touchdown on Ponce's 14-yard scamper with 7:30 left in the third. The PAT was good, making the score 50-6.
Steamboat Springs added a score against Delta's second-teamers to make the final score 50-12.
So far, Gafford has thrown for 1764 yards on 122 of 200 pass attempts. That equates to a 61 percent pass rating and 23 touchdowns in 10 games. He is ranked fifth in Class 3A quarterback rankings.
Whiteside is ranked second in Class 3A receiving with 57 receptions and 875 yards that have resulted in 12 touchdowns for the Panthers so far.
The Panthers have the second-ranked rusher in 3A in Ponce, who has 170 rushes for 1288 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ponce averages 128.8 yards per game and rushed at a 7.58 yards per carry in 10 games.blog comments powered by Disqus
